Ghannouchi: Following in Ben Ali's Footsteps

Former Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi

On January 28th, 2011, hundreds of protestors began camping outside of Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi’s office, demanding his resignation. Many believed that Ghannouchi was too close to former president Ben Ali, and suggested that a government with him in charge was no change. Protests flared up again on February 19th and 20th as 40,000 protestors continued to demand that Ghannouchi resign as interim prime minister. With more than 100,000 Tunisians protesting, Ghannouchi announced his resignation on February 27th. He was replaced by Beji Caid el Sebsi, former President of Chamber of Deputies and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Beji Caid el Sebsi is the current Prime Minister of Tunisia.
