Riots continued in Sidi Bouzid, and were slowly gaining more public attention. The outcry from the protestors was gaining an unprecedented fervor. On December 22nd, Lahseen Naji and Ramzi Al-Abboudi killed themselves in response to the rampant hunger and unemployment in Tunisia. Violence between the police and protestors also escalated, and on December 24th, Mohamed Ammari was shot in chest by police officers in the small town of Bouziane. Another protestor, Chawki Belhoussine El Hadri, was also fatally injured and died on December 30th.
By December 27, the protests had spread to Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. About 1,000 citizens, including residents of Sidi Bouzi, attended the ‘solidarity protest.’ The rally was broken off security forces, but continued soon after. Within a few days, protests had also spread to Sousse, Sfax, Meknassy, Gafsa, and Monastir. By the end of December, rallies and manifestations were occurring all over Tunisia.
